Matt Reeves, the executive producer of the Batman franchise, is expanding the universe with multiple spinoff shows that will be linked to his film series. One of these shows is The Penguin, featuring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot. The show will be a limited series with eight episodes in the first season, but the possibility of a second season exists. The events of The Penguin take place just one week after the death of Carmine Falcone, causing chaos in Gotham City, as depicted in The Batman. The series is expected to delve into the origins and motives of one of Batman’s most iconic foes, and fans are eagerly anticipating Farrell’s portrayal of the character.
Production for The Penguin has commenced, as confirmed by production designer Kalina Ivanov’s Instagram post. The show is set to air on HBO Max, with Lauren LeFranc serving as both the writer and showrunner.
The dramatic makeup and prosthetics used in Colin Farrell’s transformation into The Penguin have generated significant interest. Matt Reeves, who aims to create a realistic and grounded portrayal of the Batman universe, is likely to apply this approach to The Penguin as well. Besides The Penguin, other projects within the same franchise, including The Batman – Part II, are also in development. Reeves has a comprehensive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, indicating that he has just begun to expand his franchise. The Batman – Part II will continue Robert Pattinson’s Batman’s story, as he confronts new enemies and challenges while safeguarding Gotham City.
Clancy Brown Joins HBO Max’s The Penguin as Salvatore Maroni
Clancy Brown, renowned for his performances in movies such as Shawshank Redemption and Highlander, has joined the cast of The Penguin. He will portray Salvatore Maroni, a recurring character who serves as a crime boss mentioned but not depicted in The Batman. Although Maroni’s character did not appear in this version of Batman’s story, the downfall of his empire allowed Carmine Falcone to establish his own. Falcone’s death, which is referred to in The Batman, created the opportunity for Farrell’s Penguin to ascend as a prominent figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld.
The inclusion of Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni is anticipated to be the final major casting addition to The Penguin, which already features Cristin Milioti, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, and Rhenzy Feliz. Maroni is a character that Batman enthusiasts may recognize from other adaptations, such as Gotham, The Dark Knight, and Batman Forever. Brown is well-known for his previous villainous portrayals, including his depiction of the malevolent prison guard in The Shawshank Redemption. His performance as Maroni is sure to be a standout in The Penguin, which is set to debut on HBO Max in 2024.
