According to Matthew Macfadyen, the star of the series “Succession,” there was no clear winner at the conclusion of the show. However, HBO can claim the title of winner itself.
The series finale of “Succession” premiered on Sunday night on HBO and Max, attracting a viewership of 2.9 million people. This marks the highest audience the show has ever achieved, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous record set by Episode 6 of Season 4, which had 2.75 million viewers on April 30.
The new series high for Episode 10 is not surprising, considering that it concludes the most-watched season of “Succession.” When accounting for delayed viewing, the season is currently averaging 8.7 million viewers per episode, surpassing the average of 7.2 million viewers for Season 3. Season 4 began with a series high of 2.3 million viewers, a 33% increase from the Season 3 finale’s 1.7 million. The viewership numbers remained consistently high with Episode 2 attracting 2 million viewers, followed by 2.5 million for Episode 3, 2.6 million for Episode 4 and Episode 5. Variety reports that viewership remained relatively stable after reaching 2.75 million with Episode 6, continuing through Episode 9.
These statistics are provided by Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, and encompass both Nielsen’s measurement of traditional viewership on HBO’s cable channel and Warner Bros. Discovery’s own data on streaming numbers from Max.
In addition to “Succession,” another HBO series, “Barry,” concluded its run on Sunday night. The series finale of “Barry” attracted 700,000 viewers, immediately following the conclusion of “Succession.”
Throughout its fourth season, “Barry” did not achieve any new series highs. However, it should be acknowledged that surpassing the previous record would have been challenging, as the previous high was set in 2019 and benefited from being aired after the series finale of “Game of Thrones,” HBO’s most popular show of all time.
The fourth season of “Barry” commenced with a double episode release. Episode 1 attracted an audience of 710,000 viewers, while Episode 2 reached 550,000 viewers. Episode 3 was watched by 660,000 viewers before the season reached its peak with Episode 4, which garnered 779,000 viewers. Unfortunately, there is no available data regarding viewership for Episodes 5 through 7.
When considering delayed viewing, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) reports that the average viewership across episodes of Season 4 of “Barry” is 3.4 million viewers. Furthermore, the final episode of the season experienced a 20% increase in viewership the day after its initial airing, compared to the typical numbers.
