Millie Bobby Brown, known for her role as Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things and her involvement in other projects like Godzilla and Enola Holmes, has ventured into a new realm as a novelist with her book titled Nineteen Steps. During an appearance on the show Lorraine, she shared her plans to turn her novel into a movie, expressing her excitement to expand her creative horizons.
Nineteen Steps is a historical fiction novel set in London’s East End during World War II. It draws inspiration from the life of Brown’s grandmother, Ruth, who sadly passed away in 2020. The story revolves around an 18-year-old girl named Nellie Morris, who initially intends to marry her childhood sweetheart, an air raid warden named Billy. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she falls for a charming American airman named Ray, and tragedy strikes during an air raid.
It’s worth noting that the book was ghostwritten by Kathleen McGurl, which has raised questions about celebrities using ghostwriters without proper acknowledgment. While promoting Nineteen Steps on Instagram, Millie Bobby Brown primarily credited herself as the author but did mention Kathleen McGurl as her collaborator in one post.
Despite the controversy, Brown is deeply passionate about the novel, which serves as a tribute to her grandmother’s story. She has ambitious plans to adapt it into a movie, building on her experience as a producer for projects like Enola Holmes and the upcoming film Damsel. With her commitment to bringing Nineteen Steps to the screen, it’s likely we’ll see her continue to play a pivotal role in its creative journey, possibly even taking on a starring role in the Netflix production.
