The co-creators of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have acknowledged the fans’ concerns about the lack of Infected in Season 1 and have promised a more significant presence of the zombies in the upcoming Season 2. They stated at a press conference that they wanted to concentrate on the power of relationships and moments of action that convey significance in the first season. The creators also emphasized that the show’s balance is not just within an episode or even episode to episode, but season to season. Mazin has promised that Season 2 of The Last of Us is going to be even bigger in terms of scale, production, and Infected.
Mazin and Druckmann also addressed fans’ concerns regarding the casting of Bella Ramsey as Ellie in Season 2. They reiterated that Ramsey is Ellie and that they are thrilled to have her as part of the show. They confirmed that they know how to handle the time jump between Part 1 and Part 2 of the video game and are confident in Ramsey’s ability to portray Ellie’s spirit and soul. The showrunners praised Ramsey for her portrayal of the character, comparing her to lightning in a bottle, just like Ashley Johnson’s portrayal of Ellie in the game.
While The Last of Us Season 1 focused on relationships and character development, the creators have promised that there will be more action and Infected in the upcoming season. Mazin acknowledged that they had cut some of the action sequences that did not move the plot or character forward to maintain the balance of the show. However, fans of the game’s rabid fungi-ridden creatures can expect to see different kinds of Infected in the future.
The Last of Us Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max, and fans can look forward to a more significant presence of Infected and more massive scale in Season 2. The creators have also made it clear that Bella Ramsey is Ellie and that they are confident in her portrayal of the character.
