Galaxy Quest, a 1999 sci-fi spoof that has become a cult favorite, is set to make the leap from a fictional TV series to a real one. Paramount+ is partnering with Paramount Television Studios to create a live-action adaptation of the beloved film. Currently, the project is in the early stages of development, and executive producer Mark Johnson is searching for a writer to help with the script. While Johnson and his Gran Via Productions are attached to the project, no other executives are currently involved.
This isn’t the first time that Paramount TV Studios has tried to bring Galaxy Quest to television. In 2015, the studio developed a follow-up to the movie for Amazon, which ultimately didn’t move beyond the development stage due to the death of Alan Rickman and scheduling conflicts. Paul Scheer took over the writing for a new Amazon take in 2017, but that also didn’t move forward.
Now, Paramount TV Studios is leading the effort to revive the feature for Paramount+. The streamer is home to Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek world, and Galaxy Quest is a parody of that franchise.
