HBO has confirmed the cancellation of “Perry Mason.” The second season, which premiered in March, will be the show’s last. HBO expressed gratitude for the exceptional work of Matthew Rhys and the talented cast and crew who reimagined the beloved franchise.
Although there won’t be another season, HBO is looking forward to collaborating with Team Downey on future projects. “Perry Mason” is based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, with Matthew Rhys portraying the title role.
Unlike the 1950s TV series where Mason practiced law, the HBO adaptation depicts his earlier years as a private investigator in 1930s Los Angeles.
In addition to Matthew Rhys, the Season 2 cast of “Perry Mason” included Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Diarra Kilpatrick, Eric Lange, Justin Kirk, Katherine Waterston, Hope Davis, Fabrizio Guido, Peter Mendoza, Mark O’Brien, Paul Raci, Jen Tullock, Jon Chaffin, Onahoua Rodriguez, Jee Young Han, Sean Astin, Tommy Dewey, Shea Whigham, and Wallace Langham.
The television series was developed by Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones. Executive producers from Team Downey were Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler served as executive producers and showrunners for Season 2. Matthew Rhys also served as an executive producer alongside Joe Horacek and Tim Van Patten, who directed the majority of Season 1. Regina Hyman was the co-executive producer.
The initial season of “Perry Mason” received strong ratings and generated awards buzz, with Matthew Rhys and John Lithgow (supporting actor in Season 1) receiving Emmy nominations for their performances. Although Season 2 didn’t perform as well in terms of ratings, it received more critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 received 75% critical approval, while Season 2 saw an increase to 87%.
The cancellation of the series was first reported by Deadline.
