Kate Mara from American Horror Story and Gabriel Luna, known for The Last of Us, have joined the cast of The Astronaut, a thrilling science-fiction film with Laurence Fishburne already attached to it.
In this upcoming movie, Mara takes on the role of an astronaut who miraculously survives a punctured escape capsule adrift at sea after her maiden space voyage. She’s placed under tight surveillance and subjected to rigorous medical tests at a secure NASA facility overseen by General William Harris, portrayed by Fishburne. During her stay, she’s denied contact with her husband, played by Luna.
As strange occurrences unfold around the facility, the astronaut begins to question whether something from space might have followed her back to Earth.
Arianne Fraser, the CEO of Highland Film Group, expressed her satisfaction in a statement, stating, “We are thrilled that Kate Mara and Gabriel Luna are teaming up with Laurence Fishburne to breathe life into Jess Varley’s screenplay.”
Highland’s COO Delphine Perrier also conveyed her excitement about collaborating with this team of producers, led by Brad Fuller, to deliver this eerie science-fiction experience to a global audience.
The production of The Astronaut is under the guidance of Brad Fuller’s Fuller Media, which boasts extensive experience in the horror genre, having previously contributed to successful franchises like The Purge and A Quiet Place.
Production is scheduled to commence in October in Ireland under an interim agreement facilitated by the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA, allowing actors to work on approved independent projects during the strike.
American Horror Story airs on FX in the US and Disney+ in the UK, while The Last of Us can be seen on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
