Kevin Costner’s abrupt departure from Yellowstone has been a subject of curiosity, and he has now provided insight into his decision to leave the hit Paramount series.
In May, it was revealed that Yellowstone’s fifth season would be its last, with reports suggesting that Costner clashed with creator Taylor Sheridan due to scheduling conflicts.
During his testimony in a divorce case on September 1, Costner addressed the Yellowstone situation, characterizing it as “complicated.” He stated that he had negotiated to return for three more seasons but cited creative issues as the cause of the breakdown in negotiations, saying, “They walked away.” He hinted at the possibility of going to court over the matter.
Costner’s scheduling conflicts are believed to stem from his passion project, Horizon: An American West, which he has been working on for 35 years. Sheridan previously mentioned that Costner wanted to direct this project and that their discussions revolved around when he could complete his commitments on Yellowstone.
Costner’s departure leaves half of season five of Yellowstone yet to be filmed, marking a “truncated” conclusion to the Dutton family saga.
